Project Overview

Online consumption is reshaping how young men process emotion, often isolating them from mental health resources and pushing them toward toxic digital spaces. This project addresses that gap by creating a tactile logging system to help users reconnect with their emotional states offline.

As the UX/UI and 3D Designer, I led interaction design and visual development—crafting the physical device and its connected digital experience to promote healthy self-reflection through intuitive and masculine-coded tools.

Problem Statement

Despite widespread awareness of the issue, we saw that no product truly bridges the gap between emotional awareness and daily behavior for this group particularly in a way that feels tactile, private, and aligned with how they already navigate the world.

Persona

Our primary user is Rick, a 24-year-old warehouse worker in rural Tennessee. He struggles with burnout, sleep deprivation, and emotional detachment—coping through gaming and late-night Discord chats. Rick rejects traditional mental health tools, viewing them as corny or unrelatable.

Physical Logger

Designing the Physical Logger

The physical logger was designed to bridge the gap between emotion and action—offering a tactile, screen-free alternative to traditional wellness tools. Its purpose is to help users like Rick build emotional awareness through small, low-friction moments of reflection.

Physical Prototyping

Version 1

  • Steel vertical slider for input
  • LED ring for confirmation
  • Rear sensor for biometric reading

Version 2

  • Included OLED screen to visualize mood waveform
  • Dial for energy tracking
  • Reset + fingerprint authentication buttons

Version 3

  • 360° dial for mood input
  • Haptic feedback through embedded resistance or force detection
  • Fingerprint scanner embedded in rotary dial

The Results

Finalized Logger

Tactile-First Mood Logging

The Logger uses a 360° rotating dial with haptic feedback to make emotional check-ins feel natural and engaging. This removes the awkwardness of traditional mood apps by turning self-reflection into a hands-on ritual.

Privacy-Enabled Physical Design

Acting as both a biometric scanner and NFC key, the device offers secure access to the user’s emotional data—ensuring that private thoughts remain private, even when syncing with the app.

Designed for Masculine Minimalism

Built from anodized aluminum with magnetic mounting, the Logger blends in with daily carry items. Its low-profile design avoids stigma while providing a sense of weight, tactility, and control.
